PP ML Horse Jockey Trainer
1 10-1 Archarcharch Jon Court Jinks Fires

Action’s Line: Training lights out at the track. Could be getting better at the right time.

Scheinman’s Line: One of the top horses in the field lands the death draw. Court, in his first Derby, will need to paint a masterpiece.

2 30-1 Brilliant Speed Joel Rosario Tom Albertrani

Action’s Line: Has been beaten 40 lengths in his two dirt races. On the bright side, has one of the best young jocks.

Scheinman’s Line: Not a single blessed thing about this horse says Kentucky Derby. Virginia Derby, maybe.

3 20-1 Twice the Appeal Calvin Borel Jeff Bonde

Action’s Line: Has never been off the board in a dirt race. Picks up Borel looking for his third straight Derby.

Scheinman’s Line: Four straight good efforts, each at a longer distance. Gets Borel who likes it inside just fine.

4 20-1 Stay Thirsty Ramon Dominguez Todd Pletcher

Action’s Line: Third race in a form cycle. Beat Toby’s Corner by 4 1/2 lengths, who then beat Uncle Mo in the Wood.

Scheinman’s Line: Three of past four starts were in Grade I races, but Florida Derby was not pretty. Dark cloud hovering over Pletcher barn.

5 30-1 Decisive Moment Kerwin Clark Juan Arias

Action’s Line: Has lost ground in the stretch in six of his eight races.

Scheinman’s Line: Spunky guy with some stamina on the dam’s side. Prominent at least to the far turn.

6 30-1 Comma to the Top Patrick Valenzuela Peter Miller

Action’s Line: Might be the fastest horse in the field. Jock up will keep him together as long as he can.

Scheinman’s Line: Big effort just missing in Santa Anita Derby. Tires routinely in the lane, and now adds distance.

7 20-1 Pants On Fire Anna Napravnik Kelly Breen

Action’s Line: Was game as could be in last and is flying under the radar this week.

Scheinman’s Line: Napravnik got him to the next level in Louisiana Derby. Yet to face Grade I company. Dangerous wild card.

8 4-1 Dialed In Julien Leparoux Nick Zito

Action’s Line: Your Derby favorite. Just got up in last. Will need a lot of luck to get a clean trip here.

Scheinman’s Line: Slow finish winning in Florida, light on experience, whispers about his training. Zito reportedly full of confidence, but wouldn’t play him at the price.

9 30-1 Derby Kitten Javier Castellano Mike Maker

Action’s Line: The last horse to get into the Derby field. Won the Lexington last out.

Scheinman’s Line: See Brilliant Speed comment.

10 30-1 Twinspired Mike Smith Mike Maker

Action’s Line: Perfect name for this race. Last out was best so far.

Scheinman’s Line: Great Derby name, bred to run all day, but yet another turf horse cluttering the field.

11 30-1 Master of Hounds Garrett Gomez Aidan O’Brien

Action’s Line: Big race off a four-month layoff in Dubai. Was favorite in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Scheinman’s Line: Sire Kingmambo has thrown major dirt winners, but this colt is a mere 1-for-7 lifetime. Intriguing, nonetheless, and a top pilot has signed on to ride.

12 30-1 Santiva Shaun Bridgmohan Eddie Kenneally

Action’s Line: His only win came at the track. Ran big in the Risen Star. A return to that effort could get him a piece here.

Scheinman’s Line: Sought low-hanging fruit in weak Blue Grass and suffered a miserable trip. Grade 2 winner over the track in expert hands. Dangerous long shot.

13 12-1 Mucho Macho Man Rajiv Maragh Kathy Ritvo

Action’s Line: This horse still has a lot of growing to do, being a June foal. Never ran a bad race.

Scheinman’s Line: At 12-1, a second-tier favorite. Has run fast and gamely. Do believe he’s a cut below and may not want to go this far.

14 12 Shackleford Jesus Castanon Dale Romans

Action’s Line: Ran too good to lose in Florida Derby. Not getting an easy lead in here.

Scheinman’s Line: Romans knows how to wind them up. Strong at 69-1 in Florida Derby. Coming around at the right time. Plenty scary.

15 10-1 Midnight Interlude Victor Espinoza Bob Baffert

Action’s Line: Baffert loves the post draw. Took a big step foward in Santa Anita Derby. Will be there with another step.

Scheinman’s Line: Baffert loves this horse, but this will be his second start since maiden win. Not impossible but would be a surprise.

16 30-1 Animal Kingdom Robby Albarado Graham Motion

Action’s Line: Love the way he won the Spiral. Watch out if he likes the dirt.

Scheinman’s Line: Roared mightily through Spiral field. Worked well on Churchill dirt. Trust in Motion and love the price.

17 12-1 Soldat Alan Garcia Kiaran McLaughlin

Action’s Line: Freaked first out this year in the slop. Looks like a need-the-lead type.

Scheinman’s Line: Top Beyer figure in the field in sloppy allowance. Shine came off in Florida Derby. Rock solid until then. Would have preferred better final prep.

18 9-2 Uncle Mo John Velazquez Todd Pletcher

Scratched

19 6-1 Nehro Corey Nakatani Steve Asmussen

Action’s Line: Has come to hand in his last two. Third race in six weeks could prove too much.

Scheinman’s Line:Flashy late runs in last two, but works at Churchill have not inspired. 1-for-5 lifetime. Will take piles of money, but not mine.

20 50-1 Watch Me Go Rafael Bejarano Kathleen O’Connell

Action’s Line: Was a big number winning the Tampa Bay Derby. Up the track as favorite in last race.

Scheinman’s Line: Would be a bigger shock than Mine That Bird.
